Dr Mark McDonald is a comprehensive Ophthalmologist with special interests in Cataract, medical management of retinal disease, Glaucoma and ocular plastic lid surgery. He grew up and was educated on the Gold Coast and completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Queensland. He initially trained in Neurosurgery and General surgery before completing his advanced specialist studies in Ophthalmology in Adelaide and Melbourne.
Mark is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeon. He holds visiting medical Officer positions at Shoalhaven Hospital, Shellharbour Hospital and the Wollongong Hospital. He also operates at the Nowra Private and Shellharbour Private Hospitals.
Mark has extensive experience in the treatment of complicated cataract problems having performed over 20,000 procedures. He is also an enthusiastic proponent of new techniques such as Micro Incisional Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). He has performed extensive service to the aboriginal communities in Central Australia and volunteered overseas most recently in Fiji. He is very committed to teaching and regularly helps with the training of junior doctors, optometrist and local general practitioners. Despite this Mark feels his most important roles is the accurate diagnosis of problems of the eye and the effective communication to his patients of the best available treatment options.
Marks major interests outside work centre around his wife and teenage children. They enjoy surfing the local Southcoast beaches, skate boarding and snowboarding in the winter. Bush walking is also something they enjoy and he and his son are members of the Illawarra Kung Fu School.
